Locating sessions at the heart of where young people gather

Eikon’s outreach buses have enabled us to locate our sessions at the heart of where young people gather, rather than expecting them to travel to us. Once our presence becomes established, we find young people waiting for the bus to arrive.

Mobile Outreach Van

In early 2014 we launched “Mo”our first ever mobile outreach van, as word of our work in the local area grew so did our demand and we quickly outgrew our beloved “Mo”. In 2015 we were very fortunate to receive a generous grant from Charlotte Grobien of Give it Away Ltd which allowed us to purchase ‘Maximo’ – our bigger and better bus which has allow us to accommodate for more young people out in the community.

At least twice a week we take Maximo into hot spots in the community where young people congregate in the evenings. We provide various activities from the van such as street golf, music workshops, health advice and remote control car racing.  Our activity carousel is flexible and is very much driven by feedback from young people.

Mobile outreach offers an informal platform for our youth team to engage with young people who might not otherwise be aware of our services.   A key principle critical to our work is the establishment of trust and honesty between our youth workers and young people; our mobile outreach initiative is proving to be a fantastic facilitator in establishing this trust.

Please stop by and say hello when you see Maximo in your local area!

Bus Shelter

The ‘Bus-Shelters’ are mobile youth centres that operate at locations where young people gather in the Boroughs of Spelthorne and Elmbridge. The youth work teams focus on the needs of young people supporting those at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).

The ‘Bus Shelters’ are innovatively equipped to be able to provide programs similar to those in traditional youth centres. Resources are available to support young people’s personal, social and emotional growth through a diverse range of programs such as ‘Employability skills’, ‘C-Card’, ‘Heads Up’, cooking on a budget and financial management.  With WIFI and the latest technology on board, we are fully resourced to offer an immediate response to young people’s initial needs.

For further information about these programmes, please contact the our Youth Work team on info@eikon.org. or by phone on 01932 347 434.
