The Vail Williams team take on an epic challenge for Eikon

Pedalling across breathtaking landscapes, battling both steep climbs and unexpected weather, a group of dedicated cyclists from Vail Williams took on an extraordinary challenge: cycling through Brittany to the heart of France, raising funds for Eikon.

We are honoured that national property consultancy, Vail Williams has chosen The Eikon Charity as their regional charity of the year.

The team have taken on two mammoth cycling challenges this autumn, raising vital funds to support our work helping children in Surrey to feel and be safe, heard, and supported.

In September the team cycled between all nine regional offices, covering over 325 miles in just 2 days and in October Calum Maynard, David Barden and Matthew Samuel-Camps raised £1,665 cycling through Brittany – yet another impressive challenge completed!

Calum Maynard recorded a blog below of the teams Brittany cycling challenge where the riders pushed their physical limits while rallying support and awareness for The Eikon Charity.

‘Riding through the storm’ – by Callum Maynard

“My team and I met in Portsmouth on the night of Wednesday 25th September, we loaded our bikes and bags and took off for what would turn out to be a memorable three days.
We had signed up to complete The Challenge Adventure Charities Brittany where we would collectively ride more than 560 miles through the French countryside, as we listened to the pitter patter of the rain and the whoosh of the wind on the windows of the car, we quietly hoped it would pass by the morning when our ferry docked and we could ride out into warm sunshine and clear air.

A few weeks previously I had sat at the modest home of Eikon where I had listened with tears in my eyes to two young adults about how they had been struggling and how Eikon had helped them. In contrast to my happy youth hearing the tale of someone who had struggled so terribly it was difficult not to be moved.

Animated heart loop

We mounted up early on Thursday morning with the sunshine driving out the early morning chill. The sky was clear, but it was not to last. Matthew took the first 13-mile leg in fine weather and finer spirits for what would be a calm and peaceful day, the previous night’s storm had abated and excluding a puncture, a mech failure and driving up a one-way road we made it to our hotel with the minimum of drama and the maximum of appetite!

On Friday morning we climbed from our beds and prepared our bikes by torchlight as the sun would not rise for another two hours. We set off and the weather worsened with a cross wind and driving rain threatening to knock us from our bikes and dash us across the roads but as we struggled forwards, we couldn’t help but to look across the beaches and see the rugged beauty of the coastline of Brittany.

The final day arrived which took us across the rolling inland hills from Quimper back to St Malo and whilst fatigue was starting to show it could not stifle our spirits. We covered the 167 miles with our camaraderie unbroken. The last leg saw as many of our band as possible don their helmets and ride together to the finish.

There was one last event to conclude the challenge and that was the finishers dinner. We sat down to a well- deserved drink and a delicious meal and heard a few stories of kindness, bravado and occasional stupidity!, such as one rider pushing another up a steep hill to make it to the top; whereas in contrast one cyclist pressed the wrong button on his bike computer and following its directions rode 26 miles in the wrong direction as it routed him to the start of the course!

Vail Williams were immensely proud to be presented with the Challenge Cup. A trophy awarded to the team who best supported the ethos of the challenge.

We took the ferry back the following morning. We were surprisingly quiet as our adrenaline finally having departed leaving us with only fatigue and pride in what we had accomplished. But as the ferry gently carried us home across the Channel conversation turned to our next challenge…”

Summer activities with a positive impact

With the summer holidays here, many of us are looking for ways to enjoy time with our families (that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!). If you’re looking for activities that will keep you and your little ones busy, then check out some of our summer fundraising ideas in this blog post. There are lots of ways that you can have fun with your family, whilst helping to support young people in Surrey who need someone to turn to.

Not every child feels safe at home. For some, it can be a scary and lonely place, which is why it’s important that Eikon can be there for them. With your support, together we can help more children struggling over the summer holidays.

How does your fundraising help?

Any amount you fundraise will mean that more children in Surrey can get the support they deserve when they’re struggling and need someone to turn to.

  • £60 could help pay for children to attend a lunch club in a Surrey school, giving them a safe place to escape the pressures of school and life.
  • £120 could help fund two hours of counselling, helping a young person who is struggling to overcome whatever challenges they are facing.
  • £250 could help pay for a Youth Support Practitioner to work closely with children experiencing complex mental health challenges, family breakdown or abuse.

Have a sweet summer cake sale

You can raise some ‘dough’ by donning your aprons and baking for charity. You could invite friends and family over or approach your neighbours to see if they would like a sweet treat on a summers afternoon and ask for a small donation in return.

Two boys pulling faces
Take on a sponsored silence

Organise a sponsored silence with your children and even their friends. You could try to think of other ways to communicate with your family for the day and plan some ‘silent games’. Have a countdown to the end of your sponsored silence where you can celebrate your success with a loud cheer!

A young boy playing a recorder
Host a talent show

Encourage your little ones and friends to show off their talents – singing, dancing, playing an instrument or perhaps something totally different! Sell tickets, have a raffle and hold a refreshments stall to maximise your fundraising to support children in Surrey.

Craft materials and colouring pens
Organise a kids day club

If you’re feeling really brave, you could offer to run a club for your children and their friends and ask for a donation to The Eikon Charity in return. You could organise arts and crafts, races, nature walks, or all kinds of fun activities. Other parents get a child-free day to relax and you get to spend some quality time with your children, while raising money to help local young people.

Run, walk or jog a marathon – together we can keep children in Surrey safe

London Marathon and Virtual London Marathon will take place on Sunday 23rd April 2023.

This year, there are two ways that you can enjoy the iconic London Marathon race and give children in Surrey a safe place to turn to. You can either:

join over 50,000 runners in the streets of central London or
take on the Virtual London Marathon and tackle 26.2 miles at your own pace, on a course that suits you.

Take part in either marathon and you will be helping us give a vulnerable child in Surrey a safe space, where they can be themselves and get support from our dedicated practitioners to overcome the challenges they are facing. Running with #TeamEikon and raising vital funds means that we can be there for more children who need someone to turn to.

There is still time to sign up to either race, so why not challenge yourself, however you choose to tackle a marathon!

Big Give Christmas Challenge target exceeded

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Big Give Christmas Challenge campaign, your generous support means that we have raised an incredible £59,436 including Gift Aid! Whether you donated £10 or £10,000 we are very grateful. The money raised will mean that more vulnerable children can get sustained, personalised support within school from an Eikon Charity practitioner – before their challenges become potentially life-changing problems.

The Big Give Christmas Challenge is an annual week-long match funding campaign, where donations made to a charity’s fundraising campaign can be doubled.  For The Big Give 2021, The Eikon Charity set an overall fundraising target of £50,000, and thanks to you we have exceeded that.

Our Big Give campaign focused on supporting vulnerable school children as Covid has hit children’s mental health hard.  In every classroom there are young people who are struggling – with depression, anxiety, or abuse.  Without support their emotional wellbeing often deteriorates.  Some are self-harming or having suicidal thoughts.  Donations made to our campaign will enable us to place specialist youth workers in schools to give children the help they need.

We can’t wait for the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2022!

A note of thanks to our trust and foundation supporters

We are extremely grateful to our trust and foundation supporters who continue to stand by and support us through these uncertain times.

In particular we are grateful to The Garfield Weston Foundation, a national grant maker, who has recognised our need for unrestricted funds to allow us the agility and flexibility to deliver our new strategic priorities and awarded us a significant grant of £25,000.

We continue to look for other opportunities from other grant makers to meet our voluntary income needs so that we can deliver on the demand for our vital services for local children.
